Face to Face / Louise Williams
June 18 - July 30, 2022
An exhibition of gestural charcoal studies of anonymous faces
These quick gestural studies are intended to capture a feeling rather than a likeness. If you think you recognize your neighbour, it is only because we all share common experiences that elicit common physical gestures. In fact, none of these studies look much like the faces that inspired them either but I hope there is feeling in the gestures.
There is something very interesting about spending time looking at the human face. Every one is different and yet our common humanity is always there. No matter how plain or handsome the face might be, they all become beautifull when you draw them. These gestural studies are like passing faces in a crowd. At a quick glance, some look like strangers; some look like someone you know; some look like your tribe; and some look like you!
As far as I know, none of the people who inspired these drawings have ever been to this part of the world.
